4 Steps To Puppy Potty Training Success-Good Tips

Bringing home a new puppy can be an exciting time for your whole family. But it is also a stressful time for your newest family member. You need to understand that it can be a little scary for a young pup to leave the security of its litter and be thrust into the arms of strangers.

But with a little effort and some patience, potty training your puppy should be a relatively pain-free start to your life together.

Step 1 - Think Like A Puppy!
Your puppy is inquisitive and eager to learn but it can’t understand a word that you say. As a pack animal it’s in its nature to try to please you. So the first thing that you need to understand is that it doesn’t make a mess in the house on purpose, just to offend you. Even though it may seem that way at 3am as you step into a wet puddle on your way to the bathroom!

Step 2 - Be Consistent
Animals prefer a predictable routine. So it makes sense to stick to regular meal times, walks and of course, toilet times. Always take your pup outside when you first get up in the morning as well as making it the last thing you do before you retire to bed at night.

Step 3 - Be Patient With Your Puppy
Patience is a virtue, especially when potty training your puppy. Losing your temper and yelling at your dog is counterproductive and will result in a frightened pup that takes even longer to train.

Let your dog explore its toilet area in its own sweet time and it will be a much more relaxed and comfortable pet.

Step 4 - Reward Good Behavior
When your puppy gets it right, reward it with lots of praise. This helps to burn the potty training into the pups memory, turning it from a conscious action into just another part of the dogs daily routine.

As time passes, little ‘accidents’ will happen less often and you can rest easy at night, secure in the knowledge that your own trips to the bathroom will have no hidden surprises!

With a little perseverance, potty training your puppy can be a short yet important part of the bonding process between you and your pet. Get this right from the start and your dog will become a treasured member of your family.
